The last stretch crossing the Alps hiking started from this dreamy town in a corner of the italian Alps: St Jakob. This is Sudtirol, where everything feels suspiciously italian, but it’s all written and spoken in German. Can you imagine waking up here? It was so endlessly vast everywhere you look. Getting here hiking from Germany wasn’t easy. We went through rain, cold, dense and humid fog, and even scorching sun one day. Some days we ended soaked wet by the rain, like in Hochfügen or Mayrhofen. Was it worth it? Oh yes. It was worth every step. Every sight. I remember everything. After six days crossing the Alps this was a great prelude of the seventh and last hiking day of this Alpenüberquerung.

Standing on a clear day by the Achensee, the so-called fjord of Tirol in Austria, its color is so intense it feels made by AI.

That day was going to be a long walk next to the lake to finally end in Fügen, in the Zillertal valley. Seemed perfectly easy.

But perfection rarely comes without scratches.

If I had 1 € for every time I fell next to the Achensee, it wouldn’t be much but it would be odd it’s 2 €. One fall left scratches on my arm and hand as I shielded the camera. As if that wasn’t enough, a wasp, determined to hitch a ride in my backpack, stung me for the first time in my life. Listen, I’d known bee stings, spider nips, ant bites, dog bite, and strangely enough a parrot bite, and… this was a whole new league of pain.

And yet, none of that could compete with the inmense joy of being there. I discovered a small Alpine miracle: buttermilk with berry marmalade stirred in. Something so simple, so genius, I wondered how I’d never thought of it before.

Scratches fade and stings pass. The memories of this emerald lake, its colors, its taste, its stubborn wasp… those are mine forever.

What makes it so magical?

🔹 Formed by glacial melt and mountain streams
🔹 Surrounded by mountains which were once the bed of the Tethys Ocean
🔹 Home to waterfalls so high they fall in slow motion

🚂 The startling point of this hike is the small town of Kandersteg, easily reachable by train from Basel or Bern. From the station is just a short walk of 1 hour. But wait there’s more! Because if you choose to continue you can go the mountains that surround the lake up to a height of 1970 meters. A view of a small glacier in a 3368 meters high mountain? Two trees standing like lovers contemplating the lake forever? Trees that grow horizontally? And of course cows grazing peacefully in the alpine prairies, yes, it’s all included. I just didn’t add it here in case you ever go because the best thing is to discover them yourself.

The rain came softly on the way to the Weitsee. Like someone whispering behind you. And it stayed. Dancing over roofs, jumping over trees, sliding and flowing over time.
The clouds pressed against the trees, like a cold white blanket, soaking everything to its core.
And you still walked.
We walked looking for that silence that resonates in the rain. While everyone takes shelter of its cold caress and the paths get empty. We walked looking for those places that you only really meet when they’re soaked, and just a glimpse of a few seconds carves a forever memory.
– Do you think the rain stop soon?
– I kind of hope it doesn’t. Not today.

From Reit im Winkl through Klausenbachklamm, past the old Klausenbach-Klause, and up to Heuchenberg—by mistake, but worth it.
Each step was wrapped in birdsong plus crickets and the soft rush of water, under skies that couldn’t decide between storm and blessing.
Every step echoed with the hush of forest and the breath of mountains. And at the end of the trail, at the edge of Germany, the quiet border to Austria was there with no gate, just open land and sky.
