Happy Elio running the @mountainman.de in the Alps 🏔️
It’s the last time that this race is taking place in winter so it was definitely something very special. The weather was great, as if the sun wanted to make it really unique. The snow, the ice, the mud, the smiles, the bayrische Musik, the sound of water, the dancing air. I remember everything.
This connects me directly to my high school years where our physical education teacher would take us up the hills in Salta 🇦🇷 to run. While it was difficult, it was also a great time that we enjoyed all together at the top.

What a fantastic experience to participate in the trail running race of @mountainman.de in Reit im Winkl! 31 km with 750 elevation meters, lots of ice, even more of snow, and a fantastic sun that embellished everything.

The alpine town Reit im Winkl doesn’t need daylight to shine ✨
When the mountains go to sleep and the village lights start whispering, everything feels a little more magical.
I just realized it’s my third time here in less than a year. First time was in spring, then autumn to participate in the MountainMan, now in winter to join the MountainMan again. I think this means I have to return in full summer. It’s easy to explain what pulls me here. It’s so similar to Salta in Argentina where I was born. I had on one side the hills of Salta, on the other, the Andes mountain range. Reit im Winkl is also nested between mountains, the Chiemgaueralpen. That’s its magic. But also, it’s the people here. Everyone is so kind to me. And whenever they learn I’m from Argentina, they’re over the moon and start throwing every Spanish word they know. I love it here 🩵

Today I walked on the sea. I was in Büsum and made a Wattwanderung. The Wattenmeer is a UNESCO World Heritage and for a good reason because it’s mesmerizing. Once the water retreats, the sea bed has so many interesting things to see! We found little worms, a crab, and these that are Seepocken or Percebe in Spanish. The sun was jumping across the thousands pockets of water, and the weather couldn’t have been better. And even towards the end we had that fantastic sunset.

The last stretch crossing the Alps hiking started from this dreamy town in a corner of the italian Alps: St Jakob. This is Sudtirol, where everything feels suspiciously italian, but it’s all written and spoken in German. Can you imagine waking up here? It was so endlessly vast everywhere you look. Getting here hiking from Germany wasn’t easy. We went through rain, cold, dense and humid fog, and even scorching sun one day. Some days we ended soaked wet by the rain, like in Hochfügen or Mayrhofen. Was it worth it? Oh yes. It was worth every step. Every sight. I remember everything. After six days crossing the Alps this was a great prelude of the seventh and last hiking day of this Alpenüberquerung.

Standing on a clear day by the Achensee, the so-called fjord of Tirol in Austria, its color is so intense it feels made by AI.

That day was going to be a long walk next to the lake to finally end in Fügen, in the Zillertal valley. Seemed perfectly easy.

But perfection rarely comes without scratches.

If I had 1 € for every time I fell next to the Achensee, it wouldn’t be much but it would be odd it’s 2 €. One fall left scratches on my arm and hand as I shielded the camera. As if that wasn’t enough, a wasp, determined to hitch a ride in my backpack, stung me for the first time in my life. Listen, I’d known bee stings, spider nips, ant bites, dog bite, and strangely enough a parrot bite, and… this was a whole new league of pain.

And yet, none of that could compete with the inmense joy of being there. I discovered a small Alpine miracle: buttermilk with berry marmalade stirred in. Something so simple, so genius, I wondered how I’d never thought of it before.

Scratches fade and stings pass. The memories of this emerald lake, its colors, its taste, its stubborn wasp… those are mine forever.
